About the event

Join the Archives team for an in-depth look at the life of community and welfare worker Mary Griffith. Her life-long dedication to many charitable and religious organisations led to her appointment as a Lady of Grace of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in 1911. This important award, held at Miegunyah, is just one of Mary’s achievements. Sister to Sir Samuel Griffith and daughter of the Reverand Edward Griffith of the Wharf Street Congregational Church, Mary and her family were prominent citizens of Brisbane during the late nineteenth century, and have consequently left a trail in the QWHA archives.

We recognise their continuing connection to the land, waterways and skies, and thank them for protecting this region and its ecosystems since time immemorial. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and extend that respect to all First Nations people, acknowledging too that they never ceded sovereignty of the land, skies and waterways.
