About the event

The Artemisia arrived in mid-December 1848 carrying the first government assisted free immigrants to Moreton Bay. Her cargo of mechanics, labourers, and workers, was desperately needed. These men brought with them wives, daughters and sisters, and yet not much is known about the women of the Artemisia. One hundred and eleven passengers were recorded as having an occupation. The rest were described as “children” or “wives”. The lives and connections of these women should be highlighted. This is the story of Women of the Artemisia.
