About the event

Governor Brisbane was fond of dancing the Scottish reel with his family and friends at Government House in Sydney, reflecting his deep appreciation for the music, poetry and dance of his homeland. It raises intriguing questions about whether he envisioned the city bearing his name as a future haven for thousands of Scottish migrants, or imagined that Scottish culture would thrive so far from its roots. Join cultural historian Dr. Heather Blasdale-Clarke as she explores the vibrant Scottish heritage that blossomed in early Brisbane, revealing stories of resilience, community, and the enduring ties to Scottish identity that helped shape our Australian society.

We acknowledge the Jagera and Turrbal people as the Traditional Custodians of the Country we live and work on at Miegunyah. We recognise their continuing connection to the land, waterways and skies, and thank them for protecting this region and its ecosystems since time immemorial. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and extend that respect to all First Nations people, acknowledging too that they never ceded sovereignty of the land, skies and waterways.
