About the event

The Kent Quilt is a nationally significant item in the QWHA collection. Made in England in 1808 by Elizabeth Kent, and brought to Australia by her son, Major John Kent, the quilt is a fine example of an heirloom, carefully kept by  the same family for more than 150 years. It is regarded as an outstanding example of English patchwork and design of the early nineteenth century incorporating Egyptian and other ancient motifs that were popular at the time.

Over the years, damage caused by iron mordants has meant the quilt has deteriorated and action was needed to preserve our textile history. In 2023, it was decided to begin the restoration of this historic quilt. The Kent Quilt project is unique in that a professional conservator (Dr Michael Marendy) has chosen to train and work with a group of skilled needleworkers to undertake its preservation.

But what about the volunteers who willingly and lovingly give their time to the slow…
