About the event

The ladies of the Queensland Women's Historical Association were ahead of their time. During a period when many heritage buildings were being bulldozed in the name of progress, they realised the value in preserving Queensland's built heritage. The start of this mission, which would culminate in the purchase and restoration of Miegunyah, began with the 'Plaques Project' in 1960. The QWHA found places of significance to Queensland's colonial history, researched them and then placed blue plaques as a reminder of its history to future passersby.

Join the Archives team for a short history of the origin and development of QWHA's program for the placement of plaques at historically significant sites, not only in Queensland but also as far afield as overseas, including the UK and Biarritz!

We acknowledge the Jagera and Turrbal people as the Traditional Custodians of the Country we live and work on at Miegunyah. We recognise their continuing connection to the land, waterways and skies, and thank them for protecting this region and its ecosystems since time immemorial. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and extend that respect to all First Nations people, acknowledging too that they never ceded sovereignty of the land, skies and waterways.
